Where God restores- through partnership with the horse

“He restores my soul.” Psalm 23:3

Impulsion

Impulsion. One of my favorite horse terms. Controlled energy that propels forward with power. The balance between forward desire and thoughtful control.

A horse with impulsion wants to move forward but isn’t rushing. They carry power from behind, yet remain soft in the hand. They respond to the lightest of cues from willingness (not fear). And they move with engaged purpose: balanced, connected, attentive.

True impulsion requires trust, rhythm, and relaxation. Without those, impulsion is just tension or resistance.

Spiritually, I think impulsion mirrors surrender. Because surrender isn’t just laid out prostrate on the ground (although it starts there for many of us). Surrender is momentum, too.

We’re called to move with purpose and energy, yet under His gentle rein. We’re supposed to live attuned to Him, not driven by fear, guilt, shame, or striving. Like a horse without impulsion, we lose connection when we lag behind. Like a horse who is always surging forward with no control of the power they have, when we run ahead of Him we lose our balance.

A horse’s impulsion flows from its hindquarters, through a supple back and into a willing mind.

Likewise, our energy flows from the Spirit. But it must pass through a softened will and an attentive heart. When we resist, we brace. When we over-try, we rush. But, when we yield, stay connected, and listen for that subtle direction our movement becomes impulsion- both powerful and peaceful.

What are we offering? A ready and willing heart that He can guide with the lightest touch? Or a rigid, rushed heart that is bracing or missing the point altogether?

Impulsion. Surrendered momentum. “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25
